FIRAS Accreditation

As providers of Passive Fire Solutions, it is our job to maintain the highest possible standards on site and make sure that, whatever the fire protection works, they are installed correctly. This is why Total Design Group are a FIRAS certified installer.

What is FIRAS?

FIRAS is a Installer Certification Scheme for installation contractors of both passive and active fire protection systems, operated by Warrington Fire and accredited by UKAS to BS EN ISO/IEC 17065:2012. It has been instrumental in improving the installation and maintenance standards of passive and active fire protection products and systems.

Why is FIRAS important?

FIRAS is the mark of endorsement of competency in the installation of products and systems, vital for achieving the protection required along with the confidence to clients that these certified works have been completed to the highest standard. This allows us to certify our installation works for fire rated partitions, ceilings and the sealing of penetrations.

Total Design Passive Fire Training Area

Total Design Group set up a Passive Fire Training area to upskill their workforce to construct Passive Fire Dry Lined Partition systems. The installation was observed by a FIRAS inspector to ensure that the installation reached the high-quality assurance of the scheme. On completion of the wall construction, a further inspection followed for Passive Fire Penetrations and Seals.

The inspection considered good practice for the installation, methods, and procedures, as well as competence and documentation. Both modules were passed by the FIRAS inspector allowing Total Design Group to carry out this work as a FIRAS approved contractor.

Why choose a FIRAS certified installation contractor?

FIRAS certified contractors are required to undergo a three-stage assessment process, and only when the applicant contractor has satisfied all of these criteria is certification granted:

– Assessment of office management systems
– Assessment of workmanship of site for all trade disciplines for which certification is sought
– Competence assessment of supervisory and installation employees

All FIRAS site inspectors have technical and practical knowledge and experience in fire protection. FIRAS certificated contractors are subject to an annual audit of their offices and ongoing, random surveillance site inspections where competence and workmanship are assessed.

How does FIRAS work?

Using a FIRAS certificated company ensures that installers, assessed by FIRAS for their competence, will be adequately supervised and will only use the correct materials and methods within their tested and approved scope.

FIRAS installers are required to maintain records of every contract undertaken and to inform FIRAS of all contracts so that random inspections of the installation work can be undertaken.

On completion the company will issue a certificate of conformity. In a nutshell, if the job is not installed to FIRAS standards by the contractor, then FIRAS cannot issue certification until the works are up to the above criteria
